The Essential Wines of Italy Guide 2024 crowns Carapace Lunga Attesa

Autumn is the season for guides. Italy’s most prestigious publications confirm significant praise for the work of Tenute Lunelli, once again demonstrating their talent for producing elegant wines with character. Sunday October 8th saw the presentation of the Guida Essenziale ai Vini d’Italia, edited by Daniele Cernilli, founder of Doctor Wine, which was followed by a tasting of the selected wines. Tenute Lunelli saw no less than five labels reviewed in the guide and the crowning of Carapace Lunga Attesa 2016 as the best pure Sagrantino with a score of 97/100.

The “Carapace Lunga Attesa”, presented for the first time in 2022 with the 2015 vintage and the result of the collaboration between the Lunelli family and oenologist Luca d’Attoma, is Tenuta Castelbuono’s most representative wine and is made exclusively from selected grapes. Its name originates from the cellar – sculpture, Il Carapace, designed for the Lunelli family by maestro Arnoldo Pomodoro, which, like its wines, is an expression of the union between art and territory. The estate is also certified organic and symbolizes the family’s commitment to safeguarding the land and the people who work there every day.

The wine symbolizes the strength and longevity of a mystical land like Umbria, and in fact comes from a long ageing process of at least 7 years. What makes it particularly special is its vinification process, which uses three different materials: steel, truncated conical wooden vats and Tuscan jars and terracotta amphorae. The three resulting wines are subsequently blended, in different percentages, to produce an interpretation of the vintage and a unique style that demonstrates the multiple evolutions of Sagrantino; great power combined with softness and elegance of aromas and tannins.

All of Tenute Lunelli’s scores were excellent, including 94/100 for the Montefalco Sagrantino D.O.C.G. ‘Carapace 2018’ and 92/100 for the Montefalco Rosso Riserva D.O.C. ‘Lampante 2020’ from the Umbrian Castelnuovo estate; 93/100 for the ‘Aliotto 2020’ Toscana Rosso I.G.T and 91/100 for the ‘Solenida 2018’ Costa Toscana I.G.T from Tenuta Podernovo.
