The Carapace by Tenute Lunelli: bringing Umbrian excellence to the world

Global acclaim for the winery-sculpture by Arnaldo Pomodoro
and for its signature Montefalco Sagrantino

Set among the rolling vineyards near Bevagna, the Carapace by Tenute Lunelli — a rare fusion of art, architecture, and wine — continues to stand out as an ambassador of the Bello e Buono of Umbria worldwide. Part of the Lunelli family’s broader winemaking project spanning Trentino, Tuscany, and Umbria, the Carapace continues to stand out on the national and international stage, earning significant recognition

The cultural and touristic value of this one-of-a-kind “sculpture-winery” was in the spotlight at the UN Tourism Global Conference on Wine Tourism, the ninth edition of the United Nations’ world conference, held in Bulgaria on October 6–7. Chosen as a singular example within global wine tourism, the Carapace was presented by Camilla Lunelli, Communication Director of Gruppo Lunelli, as a virtuous model where wine, art, and landscape come together in perfect harmony.

Alongside recognition of the winery’s aesthetic and cultural value, the wines produced there have also received major confirmations. For the first time, Tenute Lunelli has been selected by Wine Spectator to participate in OperaWine, the exclusive event organized in collaboration with Vinitaly, which each year gathers a selection of the best Italian wineries in Verona. Representing them will be the Carapace 2016 Montefalco Sagrantino, the flagship label of the Lunelli family’s Umbrian project.
The winery has also earned numerous accolades from national and international critics. The American magazine Wine Enthusiast awarded 94 points and “Editors’ Choice” to Carapace 2019 Montefalco Sagrantino, 93 points to Ziggurat 2022 Montefalco Rosso, and 93 points with “Editors’ Choice” to Lampante 2021 Montefalco Rosso Riserva.

In Italy, the Carapace 2020 earned the Tre Bicchieri distinction from Gambero Rosso’s Vini d’Italia 2026, while the Carapace Lunga Attesa 2018 received the coveted Cinque Grappoli from Bibenda — the highest honor in the guide. These achievements confirm the strength and coherence of the winemaking project.
“We’re extremely proud of these results,” says Alessandro Lunelli, CEO of Tenute Lunelli. “For us, the Carapace represents not only an iconic place where art and wine meet, but also the heart of a production vision focused on excellence and respect for the land. Our interpretation of Montefalco Sagrantino seeks to reveal both its power and its grace, achieving a balance that reflects our desire to innovate while honoring tradition. It’s a wine that stirs emotion yet remains true to its roots.”
